The Cities Practice

Bracy Tucker Brown & Valanzano provides a unique approach to local government clients. We have made cities, counties and other local government entities a specialty, devoting an entire area of operations to serving their needs. Cities rely on Bracy Tucker Brown & Valanzano to represent them for one important reason – proven performance. With a combination of timely information, thoughtful strategy and creativity, we keep our clients ahead of the curve — and ahead of competing interests in the complex legislative and regulatory corridors of Washington.

Our local government practice focuses on three major areas:

Legislative/Regulatory Advocacy and Strategy
Bracy Tucker Brown & Valanzano maintains daily contact with our local government clients. We provide them with updates and advice on legislation, policy and funding decisions and with legislative and regulatory analysis. We track specific bills, documents and reports, and serve as their advocates on issues including telecommunications, economic development and clean air and water quality. In the Telecommunications Reform Act, for example, we spearheaded a victory for our cities by advocating for the protection of local government rights of way and zoning authority. We also assist our clients by preparing, facilitating, attending and reporting on meetings of organizations including the National League of Cities and the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Infrastructure and Special Projects
Knowledge of the process, the agencies, the budget laws, the personalities of major players and the leverage of probable opponents and competitors are all factors in furthering a city's interests. Bracy Tucker Brown & Valanzano has years of experience and contacts at all levels of government which give us an edge to help our clients secure the needed authorization and funding for projects. From telecommunications to brownfields, water, roads and housing projects, the firm has a long record of success.

Over the past 16 years, for example, we have helped the cities of St. Louis, Tucson, Atlanta and Fort Worth win a $500 million light rail system, a $100 million urban highway network, a $20 million multi-modal transportation center, as well as a recommitment from Congress and Department of Transportation to support a commuter rail system.

Grant Consultation and Facilitation
Bracy Tucker Brown & Valanzano works with agencies including the Departments of Housing and Urban Development, Justice, Labor and Interior to make a difference for our local government clients. We manage appropriations and technical assistance on funding opportunities. We identify resources for our clients, guide them through the arduous grant application process and help them manage grant facilitation.

For example, we have helped cities obtain waivers from HUD regulation requirements. We have also assisted local government clients with major full-funding agreements by the Federal Aviation Administration and Federal Transit Administration on numerous airport and transit projects.

Especially in an era of budget cutting, it is critical to have advisors and counselors with the experience and ability to move quickly, think creatively and strategize on the fly. Performance counts.

That’s why local governments count on Bracy Tucker Brown & Valanzano.
